Inspector Guillaume
The creation of this book combined my love of graphic design with my eagerness to create things by hand.
Inspector Guillaume is a humorous detective story about a missing duck painting. The book has lots of interactive elements for the reader, in order for them to experience the story in a more hands-on way.
This was an amazing opportunity to oversee the entire process of creating a book by myself by writing a unique story, drawing cohesive illustrations, designing the book layout, and binding.
Behind the Scenes
The Illustrations in this book were inspired by old cartoons such as The Pink Panther Show. I wanted to create a character that was simple and recognizable.
Guillaume (gee-yom) is a little French detective who wears an orange trench coat and says things like “Ah…oui…”
The Binding
This book was hand-bound using a coptic-stitch method.
This looks suspicious...
Who's behind this curtain?
The phone dial actually spins!
Interactivity
One of the most exciting aspects of this project for me was developing ways for the reader to interact with the story and make hands-on discoveries for themselves.
On one page of the story, the detective is confronted by a letter written backwards. Readers are able to use a mirror on the next page to read the message in its correct format.
