The Phantom Tollbooth Redux

This ten week illustration project was based on the classic children’s story The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. I absolutely adored this story (and its original illustrations by Jules Feiffer).

I wanted to create my own version of colorful illustrations for this story, incorporating the magical whimsicality I loved so much from reading the story as a kid with a big imagination.

Sketches

Experimentation with all of the different characters and settings in the story — an attempt to emulate the whimsicality and variety within the original story.

20 Spot Illustrations

The bulk of this project was spent working on 20 spot illustrations that would appear at the beginning of each of the 20 chapters of the book. Each illustration represents something that happened within the chapter, usually in the form of different characters or environments the characters found themselves in.
